Control Methods in the Ward

Throughout the novel it is obviously established that Nurse Mildred Ratchet is the iron fist disciplining disorderly patients. There are several occurrences where you see the various methods Nurse Ratchet uses to either calm or disturb the patients that "act out".

Most of the control methods are quite common to any psychiatric ward, the most common would be the electroshock therapy.  There were also lobotomies which is where patients would have parts of their brains dislodged most patients would become catatonic and much easier to deal with.

Nurse Ratchet also deals with various patients specific to what bothers them the most. With Billy she threatens to tell his mother whenever he acts out, where he immediately responds by listening to what she says do to fear. How Ratchet controls each patient is specific to their quirks.
